The always spot-on Feministing has a post linking to an incredible piece by Claire Hoffman in the Los Angeles Times that you and your friends should read. She spend some time with Joe Francis, the creator of the Girls Gone Wild videos that see young, drunk women take off their clothes for Francis’ cameras. Hoffman wants to know why the girls do it, but finds out a lot more about Francis and his motives than she bargained for. That’s all I can say about it, for now. Go forth and read and let me know what you think.

I was expecting him to be a jerk, but OH MY GODDESS. That article is insane. I'm seriously shocked by some of it... (shudder)

Dear God, can we start a support group for people who have read that article? That's one of the most upsetting things I've read in a while.
Having dealt first hand with raunch culture (in a very muted form) through my job, I feel like men (and maybe women) are raised to be sociopaths in some ways. I've lost count of the number of times that I have tried to explain to people that their behaviour is offensive and hurtful, and they've responded, "Don't worry baby, it's okay, I'm just playin'..." It's like a part of their brains (or hearts?) is broken. And how do you deal with people who are not capable of taking responsibility for their actions, or understanding that their actions are even horrifying int he first place? It's not like you can reason with them, or ever hope that they can understand what they're doing. This article is about a guy who seems to have molested, raped and exploited his way to the top, and it doesn't seem like he's coming down any time soon.
Can we please just send him and that guy who started American Apparel to a little island somewhere?
I think I need a drink.
