Thought I’d draw your attention to this gem of a quote by teen pop star Hilary Duff:
“I’m not, like, a crazy feminist. I think women definitely need men. Like, I couldn’t imagine having a girlfriend!”
Um, yah. Because you can only get your feminist club membership if you’re crazy, renounce men and have a girlfriend. Thanks Hilary for being such a great role model.

Oh geez. Should we stage an intervention? Maybe just send Hilary Duff an email with the definition of feminism? Sometimes I want to photocopy Tomato Nation's "Oh Yes You Are" and paste it on every street corner in town: http://www.tomatonation.com/?p=677

Nevertheless, there will always be a place in my heart for crazy women who renounce men and have a girlfriend - real envelope-pushers like Andrea Dworkin who make your world come crashing down around your ears, even if it's only for a moment.

Fair point, Anna. Fair point.
Just as there will always be a place in my heart for the likes of Britney Spears and Kelly clarkson.

I am not suprised. However since I am a feminist I'm very offended. Hillary seems like the kind of person to spend all their time working on the out-side (her apperence) and no time working on her in-side (her heart), I I'm not going to take it too seriously.

Aack! There's some teen girls on the radio right now discussing modesty in schools, and one of them just said "It's your choice if you want to cover up and be a feminist and not have sex." I didn't realize that Sister Mary-Agnes was the pinnacle of feminism.
Where do these ideas come from?

Are you serious? If that's the case, I am a very, very bad feminist.

Yessir. Cover those collarbones, miss, your flesh is compromising your ideals.
Okay, it is a bit more complicated than that. But still - I keep thinking of that episode of Saved By The Bell where Jessie (the "feminist" character) becomes a cheerleader, but she insists on wearing a floor-length skirt and all her cheers are in Olde English.

Honestly, it really bothers me that girls like Hillary Duff are the "voice of the future".
But at the end of the day, it's the schools that we need to blame for this lack of awareness and abundance of ignorance... feminism is not something that is properly taught in high schools. Rather it's treated as a "second class citizen"... taking a backseat to learning about trigonometry and other such useless subjects (that last comment was a total joke :)).

It seems like the internet is crawling with bloggers trying to counteract the Duffism that all feminists hate men and just want to get sexy with other ladies. This article is called Feminist Myths 101, and while its strong sense of irony means it's not the first place you'd send someone to get schooled, it's pretty funny: http://pandagon.net/2006/02/07/femini...
