Yes, it’s true. I wrote a book. And the book I wrote almost has a cover. That’s where you come in, Shameless Blog readers. Me and the powers that be have finally settled on two possible covers and want you, the smart and sassy readers that you are, to choose the cover for Be Good.
All you need to do is write your vote in the comments section of this blog posting and once the votes are tallied we’ll decide on a winner! Then, in October 2007, you’ll see the cover you chose in bookstores across the nation.
Also, as a special thank-you for your input, you can email me your mailing address and I’ll send you, absolutely free, this snazzy 1” Be Good pin (while supplies last, of course.)
Here’s your choices (click the images for bigger versions):
Be Good Cover #1:
Be Good Cover #2:
Voting closes on Friday, August 24th, so vote today! More information about the book after the break.Tightrope Books is proud to announce the launch of Stacey May Fowles’ debut novel:
Be Good
My past is a carefully linked chain of lies and my present is nothing more than the sparkle of swept dust.
In this gritty first novel by Stacey May Fowles, a group of Canadian twenty-somethings wrestle with sex, love, and lies. Each character has a distinct persona made of secrets and deceptions, which is shattered by the end of the book. Set against the acutely drawn urban landscapes of Montreal and Vancouver, Morgan and Hannah struggle to navigate the maze of love affairs, failed relationships, obsessions, and departures from the familiar.
Deftly shifting perspective from the innocent and idealistic Hannah to the streetwise and damaged Morgan, to their friends and the men in their lives, Be Good eloquently exposes the lies we tell ourselves and others in order to cope with life and reveals the ongoing alienation and isolation of a world where the only reliable narrator is the future.
Advance Praise for Be Good
“In turns, humourous and hard-wired, tawdry and tender, Stacey May Fowles’ Be Good is essential reading for women in their 20s. For anyone beyond, this novel rebuilds the importance of those years, illuminating the darkest parts, and startling in its ability to remind you where you’ve been. Fowles knows how to make sentences shake their booty in the best of vintage dresses. Her writing sings love songs for best friends who have gone to the brink.”
-Emily Schultz, author of Black Coffee Night and Joyland
“Be Good whispers clumsy drunken memories and desperate revisionist accounts into the ears of readers, capturing perfectly the quarter-life crisis in all its sexy, sleazy, blissful agony.”
– Zoe Whitall author of Bottle Rocket Hearts

I like the first book cover better. It would stand out in a book store. Whereas the second one isn't as catchy. I think that the second cover would make for a good back to the book, but not a cover.

I love both of them, and whoever designed them really did a great job. I think I like the simplicity of the first one, that one struck me the most. However I do like the quote on the second one. But if I were to chose, I would vote for cover #1. Can't wait to see it in stores!

For once I agree with the masses (okay, 2 people) - #1 is better. Picturesque alleyway, simple sans serif font, what more could you want? 2 is good but seems more like a promo page than a cover.
Congrats, Stacey May!

Number one, definitely. Make sure that quote from ZW gets on the back cover tho'. Congrats!

Congrats, Stacey May! Very exciting stuff.
I also like #1 better (although I agree with Anna, #2 would make an awesome promo poster). I like the ambiguity of the first, and I think it is more visually striking.

I'm all for cover #1. Can't wait to read it.

Well, if I have to judge a book by it's cover... I'll pick number one. It would catch my eye while perusing the shelves at the bookstore.
Both covers are wonderful though!

I'm going to be a dissenting voice and say I prefer the second cover, but with the praise quote moved to the back. I think the second cover's edgier, with the close-up of the woman's body, minus her head, and the slightly awkward, almost coquettish positioning of her feet. I like the swirls and the red band. I think the second cover pops more while the first one's more stark with all that white at the top...
There's more than my two cents for you!

I vote for cover 1. The tiny woman under a blank expanse of sky captures the anxiety of being 20-something. The alley hints at the "the maze of love affairs, failed relationships, obsessions, and departures from the familiar."
Cover 2 is nice-looking, but it's not very different from most books being published right now.
Congrats on getting two nice covers to chose from. Often, small presses don't make the best choices for covers.

I'm going for number one! I love the expanse of sky... i like simplicity.

first reaction was: NUMBER TWO! colour! BOLD! she looks like she's gonna bop someone somethin' good once they finally get there.
but you know, if i were in a book shop and looking for something to read i'd reach for number 1 over number two... just because.
so i vote number 1.
final answer.

Cover number one, definitely. I'm not a fan of reviews on the front cover. Number one is elegant and tasteful.

Cover number 1! I like it even more after some smarty pants above (Kat, I believe) pointed out that the big ol' sky is a metaphor for being lost and 20-something. Oh Lord, the poignancy!
But stick that quote on the front cover (I would say at the top) where people can see it! I totally had to be talked into having a rave review posted on my cover (it did seem tacky) but it's what everyone does ...

I like the first one best. Seems like I've seen that second one somewhere before...

My vote is for Cover #1... I like the feeling of emptiness that it gives.
Cover #2 though nice, has too much going on and I find it a little distracting.

I'm going with number 2! it's more intimate and sexier. I'm more interested and curious about the woman in version # 2. If you go with #1 (and it looks like i'm in the minority here so you might), i would suggest #2 as a promo image.

My vote goes to cover Number 1 - without a doubt. It's starker, edgier and less busy. All that white would catch my eye and I like how small she looks in the space.
But hey - I'm already a fan and I'd buy the book whatever the cover looks like!!

Vote: Cover #1
Suggestion: Use the side profile of the woman as the spine image. Love the swirlies.

#1 - the second is way too cluttered, and wouldn't pass the 20-foot test...would it stand out if it were face out on a shelf of books in a bookstore. (no pin required)

since we're down, i'm going to cut to the chase:
i would not even consider the second option. no way. kitsch and too busy.
i think the first option is significantly the stronger of the two, but i'd lose the little pieces of filigree bookending your name.
regardless of your final decision, i'm looking forward to reading more of your work and will be sure to order this the moment it drops.

Difficult decision since I'm the mother of the cover girl. I'm expected to like them both! However, from a promotional point of view, I think Number 1 gets my vote. It's a compelling photo which draws the viewer into the alley without knowing what to expect. It's a little unsettling, scary, adventurous and mysterious.
Congratulations Stacey May.

I like the first one...makes me wonder where she's going and where she'll take me as a reader. I want to follow her, I want to know what goes on in the 'back-alley' of her life.

I vote for number one for all of the reasons cited above. As for number two: I really like her shoes!

This is going to sound oddly pragmatic, but: I recall a piece of advice saying to avoid predominantly white colours, mainly because if the book ever gets scuffed about or remotely dirty, it'll show really easily and look bad.
But that's more an argument to keep the texture of the overcast sky, if very slightly (and if that's even possible, which it may not be). Plus you could always flog any bookstore that treats your books so poorly. Otherwise, #1 all the way.

I vote #1. The second cover has a great image and quote but it's too crowded for a cover. I'd definetely like to see it on the back cover though.

#1 is the one that really got me. Really great. Is the Spence behind all this coverliciousness? Talent, I tell you. PS, Fowles - I am so excited for you. Seeing the cover really brought it home to me in a new way how close you are to putting the finishing touches on this most remarkable achievement. Very very excited for you.

i like #1. it looks good but i am wondering if it would be too stark in book format. also imagine it on a display in a shop - the little blurb really helps people know what to expect.

Hi Stacey:
Though no doubt you've made your decision (a good one, I think,if you've gone with the cover #1 consensus), I'd like to add my congratulations to you. I will buy this, if only to know you better! Glad we had a fleeting chance to know one another, and I wish you the success you deserve!

I totally agree that the first cover is more clean and attention-grabbing, whereas the second one has too many elements. I hope to see cover # 1 facing me in book stores. :)
All the best,
