Okay, so everyone knows I personally hate abstinence-only sex education. But what I hate even more is when the American government uses tax-payer dollars to publicize abstinence-only sex education. The Bush administration hates Planned Parenthood (assuming it’s all about abortion when it’s not) and cut a ton of their funding, but they spend money on crap like this? Boo.

Hmm. Wait until you're married, eh? Then I suppose if you're gay and don't live in Vermont, you must DIE A VIRGIN.
Thanks again, compulsory heteronormativity.

What I find most offensive about this is the message it conveys about kids not being able to make their own decisions: "even if I roll my eyes" at your absurd ideas about abstinence-only discussions of sex, ignore me and keep preaching!
It also makes me thankful for This American Life, which this week featured an episode under the headline "How To Talk To Kids," in which Ira Glass interviews the teen editors of Sex, Etc. on how they think parents should talk to their kids about sex. It's a really great segment, I highly advise you to download the free podcast here: http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Episode...
Sex, Etc., which I hadn't heard about until the podcast, looks amazing.

I know enough people who did wait till they were married (or life partnered) to have sex - at the same time, for many people (myself included), it's a totally unrealistic and absurd goal. And if you hear enough times that waiting until you're hitched is "the right thing to do", you'll get huge feelings of guilt and shame if you give in to totally regular and sensible lovin' feelings, and don't wind up waiting.
The whole thing has "repression of deep-seated emotional trauma and urges" written all over it. Definitely a great use of tax money.

I know you've heard this a million times, but people are gonna have sex outside of marriage no matter what kind of sex ed they get. These conservative republicans are so victorian. Drives me flippin' crazy.
