I’m lovin’ this little item from Come As You Are as a perfect holiday gift:
“Looking for a little glitter? To the untrained eye, a Just In Case Condom Compact appears to be a regular makeup compact… but just flip up the false bottom, and the real contents are revealed. These condom compacts are the perfect gift for anyone who wants to practice discreet safe sex in style!”
The “Just In Case” comes in two versions: a basic $20 compact, and the little more pricey “Bling” version. The perfect secret place for the safe, Shameless gal on your list!

These are stylish and cute - but I also think that ladies shouldn't hide the fact that we use/have condoms because
1) heck, it's okay that we like having sex!
2) we should be proud that we're protecting ourselves - instead of hiding the fact that we take care of ourselves in our false bottom compacts.
Having said that, I regularly go to great lengths to conceal my contraceptives, and will be right back after I find a quiet corner to hyperventilate in because I just admitted on the internet that I like sex.

In a perfect world Thea, yes you're right. But I think it is great for some younger teenage folks who are having safe, informed, happy sex who might be in a position (living at home) where they would have to hide it from their 'rents.
It would be nice if we could be open with our parents about having sex, but that's not always possible, and this is a nice tool for remaining safe and keeping it quiet in certain situations, no?

I love little gadgets like that first one. So clicky-looking and cool.

Here's another angle. If girls feel it is necessary to buy these cases, what does it mean? Do we think that it's fair for people to assume that people who carry condoms must be having sex? Granted, this may be the case for some girls with very conservative families, but chances are they have already found some less costly way to conceal condoms. I think this is just another trendy gift for those hoping to buy their way into lefty political circles. Otherwise the market would be too small. Maybe the world is bleaker than I think though.

Myra - Hrmm. When I saw this item I immediately pictured the market being older club hopping folks. Like the Sex and the City girls - a stocking stuffer for the gal who also has to have a bejewelled cell phone holder and lipstick case to match. Just a fun fashion item. I don't think that means the world is bleak though! Just kitschy. :)
Can you explain more about your lefty circle interpretation?

Stacey May, I saw these at Come As You Are a couple of months ago and instantly wanted one. And dammit, now I want one again.
I saw them as the opposite of condom-shame. Finally a product on the market explicitly intended for carrying around prophylactics. That it does double duty as compact and carrier and is, as Erin said, "clicky-looking" are also qualities that appeal to my sorting and organizing tendencies.
It's true that it is discrete about being a condom case. Which some people may find desirable. Not out of shame, but because condoms can be a necessary but not super fun part of sex. And giving them their own little tricked out case makes them more playful and less perfunctory.
When I first saw these cases my reaction was to wish I had sex "on the go" more often, so I could justify buying one... ;)

Catherine: My thoughts exactly. I have no current use for this little contraption, but it made me want one all the same. It manages to make safe sex postive, fun and dare I say fashionable, which seems great and really postive to me. It's so proud of safe sex and personal responsibility that it dresses it up and makes it fancy - thumbs up!

Not to mention, the case keeps the condom safe and intact. My purse/pockets are always full and I'd worry about the condom getting damaged, coming unwrapped, etc. With this, you can be sure it's undamaged, which is very important!
