On Monday, Coun. Adam Vaughn of Ward 20 in downtown Toronto presented a petition signed by 260 residents in his ward demanding an apology. Speaker Sandra Bussin ruled that Ford must retract his comments and apologize. But before he apologized, Ford cited numerous references to the world “Oriental” in popular culture — including an ad for corn starch in a supermarket flyer that promotes “Oriental-flavoured 100 per cent corn starch.”
I give up. He may have said sorry, but he still doesn’t get it.

I was upset to read in the news today that "Rob Ford apologized" - upset that it was reported that way because someone I know was actually at the session where he apologized and said that it really was not an apology at all.
The news reports don't really detail what he said - ie that he went on for a while naming all the different things he'd found with the word "oriental" in it. And then he said he wasn't going to apologise and sat down. After the crowd basically erupted and started yelling and jeering, he stood up, said "sorry" really quietly and sat down again.
I'm pretty grossed out that that's reported as "an apology" - and that city council accepted it as an apology. Ford gets good press for doing essentially nothing.

Does Ford understand the concept of context?
Even if he said "I'm sorry I used the word 'Oriental' in a racist manner. I understand my comment was derogatory and wish to make amends", it wouldn't matter. Because the apology would not sincere, his mentality won't change, and he will continue to be an overall insensitive jerk.
