October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. What better way to celebrate than by becoming better acquainted with your own personal pair?

Create Some Atmosphere
Find a quiet place by yourself, or hey – invite some adventurous friends over, eat thematic cupcakes and turn it into a “Love Your Boobies” party!

Take a few moments to breathe deeply and tune in to yourself.
Light some candles if you’re in the mood. Or if you crave something more clinical, turn on your halogen desk lamp and run your hands under cold water.
The pros in the crowd will alredy be cranking the tunes and shaking like a Polaroid picture by now. Anything goes.
Environmental Assessment
First up, focus on the habitat you offer your breasts on a daily (and nightly) basis: The bra. The baggy hoody. Whatever. How’s the fit? How’s the vibe? Maybe it’s due for some retooling. Or maybe it’s all as comfy and cozy and inspiring as this:

Then, if applicable, liberate your ladies from the shackles of oppressive undergarmentude and feel the sweet breeze of freedom.
Visualization
Get right in front of the mirror and take a look. Check ‘em out from different angles. Look down. Get horizontal. Hang upside down on the bottom of your bed and see what gravity has to offer, if anything.
Admire them with wonder and a smile.
Get Hands On
Then, warm up your hands, or get some lotion, and give yourself a gentle massage. We know self-exams are important, but some of us aren’t sure about technique or frequency. Not to worry. The Canadian Breast Cancer Society says
“There is more than one way to check your breasts. There is no right or wrong way, and no need to follow a particular routine unless that is what works for you. Choose a way that is comfortable for you.”
Go with the flow! Rub away any tense spots. Notice texture changes. Get to know the whole zone including your rib cage, armpits and the area right up to your collarbone. This first time out, don’t worry about it. Just say hello. Give your self some focused love and attention.
This is fun! Your body belongs to you.
Tune In
Take notice of any physical or emotional responses you have: pleasure, pain, laughter, nerves… Spend a few moments listening to yourself and see if anything interesting bubbles up.
When you’ve had enough, give yourself a loving and congratulatory pat on the, erm, chest. Tell your breasts that you appreciate them, and promise you’ll be back before long to see how they’re doing.
