All About Shameless
Hi, Shameless!

Hello, Shameless readers!

My name is Teresa and this is my first of, hopefully, many blog posts to come. I am a queer Chinese/Taiwanese daughter, sister and friend (relationship titles that I really value). I’ve spent half of my life living in Taiwan and the other half in Canada. I spend the daytime working at the Toronto Women’s Bookstore, one of the largest feminist bookstores in North America. During my off-time, I am usually obsessively reading various blogs, with at least 12 browser windows open at once. When I’m not doing that, I spend my time making zines, journaling and writing down family stories.

My interests include fashion/style/trends, representation of race in pop culture, and urban and public space. I will be centering most of my posts around these issues.

And just as a fun random fact about myself, one of my earliest feminist and anti-racist influences was The Baby-sitter’s Club series by Ann M. Martin (and by “earliest,” I’m talkin’ when I was nine or ten years old). There was something about a group of girls my age, coming together to “do it for themselves” that had me hooked. They built community, empowered themselves and threw pizza parties with the profits they made. And this all came about because these girls recognized their different skills and potential and applied them to something that was bigger than themselves. And for those familiar with the series, you must remember Claudia Kishi, the kick-ass, creative, fashionable and sassy Japanese-American character. Her character traits were “unexpected” of her as an East-Asian character (stereotypical East-Asian girls as equating to quiet, obedient and excelling in school), which really appealed to me. Granted, all the babysitters had class privilege, amongst other problematic aspects of the series, but I was young and to my nine year-old self, the sitters were incredibly inspiring.

I look forward to being a part of the blogging team!

Marni Wedin: Writer, Producer… Amazing

Every Thursday I profile a new incredible woman, each from a different walk of life. Different professions, causes, backgrounds, ethnicities, orientations, and anything/everything else!

So without further delay, let me introduce the incredible Marni Wedin…

Marni_Wedin

Writer, producer, and self-professed social media junkie, Marni Wedin is always working on something interesting. As a television producer, Marni’s first project was a segment for UHB television in Sapporo, Japan about four female expats dealing with culture shock. Marni has written and produced over 1,000 episodes of both studio and magazine-style programs since, including features on Salman Rushdie and Norman Jewison.

A regular contributor to Modern Dog Magazine, her recent writing highlights include a feature on Jennifer Aniston & Owen Wilson’s Marley & Me, a profile of Die Hard 4 star, Maggie Q and Broadway star Ashley Brown. Her work has also appeared in Triathlon Magazine Canada, Triathlon British Columbia Magazine, and tastingvancouver.ca. And that’s only a sample of what Marni’s been up to!

RiP: A Remix Manifesto

In January, I blogged about RiP: A Remix Manifesto, a movie aimed at criticizing international copyright law, a system that tramples art and innovation, and makes criminals of small children and old ladies. We live in a world where major corporations are declaring they “own” everything from rain forest plants to human DNA. In February, the Electronic Frontier Foundation began a protest of YouTube’s Fair Use Massacre, in which copyright owners (notably Warner Music Group) sent out takedown notices, threatening users who posted videos as innocent as teen girls practicing their piano and singing Christmas songs. Fair use has been gutted and major corporations are seizing “ownership” of our entire universe.

RiP: A Remix Manifesto has since been released, screened in theaters and available in its entirety on the Internet. Brett Gaylor, the filmmaker, still considers it a work in progress, open to being remixed by its audience. At the end of each chapter, Brett offers a prompt to viewers, asking fans to add everything from animation to soundtrack music. Grab material from Open Source Cinema and work your own magic! Art is meant to be shared, not owned.

Free Comic Book Day! May 2nd! Hooray!

It’s here! The best holiday of the spring! Easter? Nah! Passover? Fuggedaboudit! It’s Free Comic Book Day! Okay, maybe it’s not an official holiday, but it should be!

FCBD!

Every year, on the first Saturday in May, retailers around the world give away free comic books.

Free Comic Book Day is a great way for new readers to gingerly step into the world of comics, or for comic fans to try something new, with no pressure.

In Halifax, it’s an awesome community event hosted by the shop I work at, Strange Adventures. We have artists doing sketches, Superheros hanging around signing autographs, magic shows and thousands of comics to give away. It’s all FREE FREE FREE.

I interviewed my boss, Calum Johnston, owner of Strange Adventures, about why he thinks Free Comic Book Day is important.

To find a participating retailer in your area, check out the Free Comic Book Day store locater.

So bring along everyone your know, and get yourself something for free, because that ain’t happening anywhere else in THIS ECONOMY. Wackity smackity dooo.

Spring Gardening

Newspaper Pots (Little House in the Suburbs)

If you live anywhere along the border like most Canadians, the idea of having to bring in your planters at night so your Petunias don’t freeze to death will be somewhat foreign. Our friends in Vancouver are celebrating spring under the cherry blossoms and Toronto seems to be at a nice 25C right now. But up here in Prince George it’s still chilly during the day and dipping below freezing at night, which means our growing season is a little short.

Often gardeners here start their seed a few months in advance, inside, under the pale light of fake sun. Gardening helpers, like these Newspaper Seedling Pots or Newspaper Seedling Packs from Little House in the Suburbs are a handy and waste-reducing way to get your garden a-growin’ before the ice has even left your flower beds. Even if you just want to plant some basil in your windowsill to dress up some summer pastas, these might be a cheap (and environmental) alternative to those kits at the grocery store. All you’ll have to do is thicken up the newspaper and make sure you put it on a plate or on a yoghurt lid and in some sunshine.

I Need Your Vegetarian / Vegan Help!

First of all, this is not a post about the pros/cons or ethical/eco/health issues of vegetarianism.

For my own reasons, and after one failed attempt a few years ago, I’m again going vegetarian, perhaps even vegan (I love cheese, but my tummy doesn’t!).

-veg

I’ve been meat-free for a few months now and things are going great. I’m feeling awesome! My complexion has changed for the better, I’ve dropped a few pounds (I’m not trying to loose weight, but I did have a couple pounds of fat that I needed to rid my body of if I wanted to be healthy), and even the flesh under my fingernails looks nice and rosy and pink. And I’m full of energy!

The main reason my former attempt at vegetarianism failed was lack of yummy recipes and knowledge of meat-free alternatives available.

So here is where I ask for your help and expertise…

Cooked to Perfection

When I opened the new issue of DMZ this week, I was floored by the amazing art by fill-in creator, Nikki Cook.

DMZ is a series set in the near future where a brutal civil war is being waged in the United States. The comic is a critical and complex read, made irresistible by great characters. This issue focuses on Zee, a radical-medic, who is committed and unflappable in an absolutely chaotic environment.

Zee, DMZ

Cook does an amazing job portraying these characters, and giving us insight into their thoughts and feelings through their expressive faces. This issue is rad, thanks in large part to Cook.
